Improve your sleep with the right bed
Sleep is an important part of everyday life, rejuvenating your body and giving you the concentration you need to get through the day.
According to The Sleep Council your mattress and bed could be stopping you from achieving sleep serenity.
The council suggests replacing your mattress every seven years as it deteriorates over time and your body’s sleep needs change.
The council has created a Mattress Obsolesce Test to determine if you need a new mattress.
Questions to ask yourself:
Is the bed more than ten years old?
Do you wake up with neck or back ache?
Is the mattress torn or stained?
Do you feel any internal springs or ridges when lying in bed?
Do you hear noises when you move in bed?
Do you and your sleep partner roll towards each other?
Is the bed too small?
Is the base uneven or sagging?
Are the legs worn out?
Would it be embarrassing if someone saw the bed without covers on?
If you answered yes to more than three questions your mattress is having adverse effects on your sleep.
March is the Sleep Council's National Bed Month and an ideal time to buy a new mattress for your home to improve your sleep.
Brent Cooper from the Marshall & Stewart bed company has decided to share his top tips for choosing a new bed and mattress in recognition of the month.
“A restful night of quality sleep is vital for good health,” he said.
“If you want to work well, enjoy good relationships with your loved-ones and work colleagues, then improve your sleep quality."
His number one tip is; ensure your mattress has the right support.
Hard mattresses are not the equivalent of supportive ones, so choose the right support for your body type and weight.
Size and length are important and Mr Cooper encourages people to buy the biggest bed they can fit into their room.
That way your partner’s sleep will not affect your sleep.
He suggests buying a bed that is at least six inches taller than you are for maximum comfort.
Opt for natural filling rather than latex or foam because while these materials offer support they do not help regulate your body temperature.
Finally, Mr Cooper encourages people to talk to the store consultant when choosing a bed because they are trained to find the right level of comfort for every sleeper.
