Big Six continue to drop utility tariffs

Thursday, 12 January 2012 3:09 PM

The Big Six energy companies are continuing to respond to the drop in energy wholesale prices with more attractive rates for homeowners crippled by big winter bills.

British Gas has cut bills for more than five million customers by announcing an average 5% drop in its standard electricity tariff.

British Gas said there was no reduction in its gas price, Southern Electric and Swalec owner SSE said later that it would cut the price of household gas by 4.5% from March 26.
On Wednesday, French-owned rival EDF cut gas prices by 5%. Other operators are expected to follow suit.

“British Gas need to offer a far more competitive package to attract new customers and retain their existing market share,” said Mark Todd, director of the independent price comparison service Energyhelpline.com.

“It will be fascinating to see what the remaining four members of the “Big Six” do now because there are very real opportunities to increase customers if they play their cards right.”
