Thursday, 12 January 2012 11:36 AM

EDF Energy is cutting its prices by five per cent with effect from February 7.

The average household bill for a dual fuel customer will now drop from £1,241 to £1,203.

It is the first of the big six suppliers to respond to lower wholesale costs by cutting prices for customers.

EDF increased its prices by 19 per cent or £195 last year. Its average household energy bill in October 2010 was £1,037.

After the cut it will be £166 or 16 per cent higher than just over a year ago.

Director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, Ann Robinson, said: “Pressure to cut prices has been mounting and now one of Britain's biggest energy suppliers has let the cork out of the bottle.

“It's good news for consumers, but look through the fizz and the bubbles and we're left with the cold reality that prices are still substantially higher than they were just over a year ago.”
